Great rooms were the rage a few years ago. Granted, with no walls breaking your view, and high ceilings, a relatively small area can appear huge. You can have that open, airy feeling and still separate your living spaces visually.
Almost all great rooms suggest a division between kitchen and family room by having either a butcher block work area with bar seating on the back of it or an attached breakfast bar that extends into the room. Making sure you leave a walkway between them, place a glass rectangular or oval table and chairs on an area rug parallel to that bar and you now have a dining area that does not visually cut up the room.
That big fire place on the far wall with the television built in above it is good in one respect. It provides one easily decorated focal point, instead of two. Since there is usually a long wall of glass and sliding doors between the kitchen and the fireplace, you lose a long area that cannot be effectively used for furniture placement. No problem!
A large area rug in front of the fireplace, with either two sofas facing each other and adjacent to the fireplace or a long sofa facing the fireplace with either love seats or chairs completing the square, will be perfect. A square, glass topped coffee table will leave the space looking open and roomy. If you need more seating, place two ottomans in from of the fireplace instead of the table. They can be used as foot stools or additional seating.
