Decorating for the Artistic Soul

Designing Your Kitchen on the Weekends

Posted by: Lisa Mason on: October 5, 2009

If you are trying to look for ideas to design your kitchen then you should take the time to look at many things. Start out with what kind of theme you want. Then pick a specific color or two colors that match for your walls, curtains, and cabinets. If you are following a budget, don’t worry, there are many affordable ways you can renew your kitchen. The best way to get the best you can out of the budget you have set is to do all the work yourself. Make sure you allow yourself a few days of work. Don’t plan to get everything done on a weekend especially if you have a job. Plan a job like this during a long holiday break so that you don’t have to end up calling a professional to come finish the work for you.

You can always do the light things on the weekend like the window treatment. Take your window measurements on any day of the week and save them. Go shopping for them on a Friday, put them up on a Saturday and on Sunday enjoy the beginning of a new kitchen. Your curtains will alone make a difference especially if you pick the right ones. Remember, the curtains should match whatever theme you will create in the future. Although the curtains should be the last thing you should get, I understand that some people are too busy and can’t wait to change anything in the kitchen.

You can also possibly work on the walls of your kitchen on a weekend if you start early. Purchase what you need whether it is paint or wallpaper during the weekdays and put them aside for Friday. You can start painting on Friday. You might be able to finish the same day. Allow the walls to dry on Saturday and enjoy them on Sunday. Always allow good circulation if you are painting or doing wallpaper so everything could dry quicker. Keep in mind that paint will take longer to dry and it is always best to do this during the warmer months.

The kitchen cabinets will take the longest to work on especially if you have to sand them first before you do a refacing. Those who financially can not change their cabinets and have cabinets that are in good shape anyway will just need to refinish them. You can begin to make small repairs like hinges or even change the knobs. Do all the repairs on one weekend. On the next weekend, plan to do the sanding. This might take a day or two. On the 3rd weekend do the finishing.

Once the cabinets are all dried up, you will be looking at a new kitchen. It can be very enjoyable and very cheap to make changes in your home. You can always add some finishing touches on your own to complement the kitchen. To remodel your kitchen you don’t have to do too much, window treatment, wall treatment, and cabinet treatment will make all the difference to make you happy.
