Decorating for the Artistic Soul

In the fast paced world we live in and with all the things that need to be done it is extremely hard sometimes to find the time to show Dad how much you care. Fathers Day is that special time of year where we all have the opportunity to let our Dad’s know just how much we really love them, but have you ever wondered how Fathers Day first got started?

During the first part of the twentieth century, Father’s Day was added to the list of celebrated holidays as a way to honor Dad’s all over the world for the wonderful job they do. It was designed to compliment Mothers Day and is usually celebrated shortly after Mothers Day although Fathers Day is celebrated on different days in different parts of the world.

This holiday is celebrated by giving Dad gifts and planning activities for the whole family to enjoy together. Recently gifts such as tools and electronics are widely promoted as great Fathers Day presents. Flowers are also worn to celebrate this wonderful holiday. Traditionally, a white flower is worn to honor a Dad that is deceased and a red rose is for the Dad who is still living.

There are several different events that involve a variety of people that helped to inspire and make Fathers Day a holiday. The very first Fathers Day that was celebrated in the United States was in the year 1908 on July 5th. The Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South in Fairmont West Virginia is where this Fathers Day service was held.

The two events that are believed to have inspired this service are as follows. One event was a service that was held for Mother’s Day in a nearby town for the very first time and the other was a tragic explosion that killed three hundred and sixty-one men. This explosion occurred in a mine that was located in Monongah.

However, the person who is given the most credit for getting this holiday underway is a lady named Mrs. Sonora Dodd. Her father was a civil war veteran named Mr. William Smart. His wife died when she was delivering their sixth child and he continued to raise and care for all six children alone. Mrs. Dodd wanted to honor her father for this, so in 1909 she suggested making Father’s Day a regular holiday. She asked that this day be on June 5th, but due to lack of time it was scheduled for the third Sunday in June.

During this time people all over the United States were beginning to celebrate Fathers Day as well. This is why some people remember Mrs. Charles Clayton from West Virginia as one of the people who originated Fathers Day. Still most of the credit is given to Mrs. Dodd.

In the year 1966 the presidential proclamation was signed that made Fathers Day an official holiday to be celebrated on the 3rd Sunday of every June. However, it was not actually recognized until the year 1972 when Richard Nixon was president. It has been celebrated every since and is one of the most popular holidays recognized today.

With Father’s Day approaching soon, this is a great time to remember your Father and in the spirit of remembering Dad, we have found some great quotes for or about fathers. This year when Fathers Day rolls around, be sure you remember the special man that helped bring you into this world. Write, call, take him out for dinner or golf or get him a heartfelt gift like those found at UDO!

“None of you can ever be proud enough of being the child of SUCH a Father who has not his equal in this world-so great, so good, so faultless. Try, all of you, to follow in his footsteps and don’t be discouraged, for to be really in everything like him none of you, I am sure, will ever be. Try, therefore, to be like him in some points, and you will have acquired a great deal.” — Victoria, Queen of England

“A father is always making his baby into a little woman. And when she is a woman he turns her back again.” — Enid Bagnold

“It no longer bothers me that I may be constantly searching for father figures; by this time, I have found several and dearly enjoyed knowing them all.” — Alice Walker

“That is the thankless position of the father in the family-the provider for all, and the enemy of all.” — J. August Strindberg

“A man knows when he is growing old because he begins to look like his father.” — Gabriel García Márquez

“It is a wise father that knows his own child.” — William Shakespeare

“It doesn’t matter who my father was; it matters who I remember he was.” — Anne Sexton

“One father is more than a hundred schoolmasters.” — English Proverb

“To be a successful father . . . there’s one absolute rule: when you have a kid, don’t look at it for the first two years.” — Ernest Hemingway

“I cannot think of any need in childhood as strong as the need for a father’s protection.” — Sigmund Freud

“I watched a small man with thick calluses on both hands work fifteen and sixteen hours a day. I saw him once literally bleed from the bottoms of his feet, a man who came here uneducated, alone, unable to speak the language, who taught me all I needed to know about faith and hard work by the simple eloquence of his example.” — Mario Cuomo

“Blessed indeed is the man who hears many gentle voices call him father!” — Lydia M. Child

“Be kind to thy father, for when thou wert young,
Who loved thee so fondly as he?
He caught the first accents that fell from thy tongue,
And joined in thy innocent glee.”
— Margaret Courtney

“If the new American father feels bewildered and even defeated, let him take comfort from the fact that whatever he does in any fathering situation has a fifty percent chance of being right.” — Bill Cosby

Your master bedroom should be a sanctuary for rest and relaxation. For many of us, however, it is the most overlooked room in the house. It becomes a last priority in the busyness of life. Whether time or money is the reason for your master bedroom’s neglect, these tips should help you quickly transform a drab bedroom to a mater suite at a price anyone can afford.

First, evaluate the layout of the room. Is there a design that would better suit your purposes? Is there a way of arranging the furniture that would offer a more appealing look? Remember, furniture does not have to be flat against the wall. A bed straddling two corners offers a nice look.

Next, check out the colors of the room. What is the predominant color or colors? Do you like them? If not, make a change. Painting the walls of a bedroom can add color in an instant. This is the cheapest way to make a dramatic difference. Don’t fall victim to white walls. Find a pastel that fits your color theme. Or, if you are feeling daring, pick a darker color and paint one wall with it.

Fabric is another way to add a spice to dull bedroom. While picking window treatments is important, the influence of fabric does not need to end there. Find a fabric that adds color and texture to your room and hang it as a wall decoration. Window dowel rods are not reserved for the windows alone. Hang them anywhere you want to add some fabric. The accent draperies add to a room, even on a mock window, can make a big difference in the appearance of a room.

When picking fabric for the walls and windows, keep the color and pattern of your bedding in mind. Getting a completely new comforter or duvet can be expensive. There are other options, however. Add a blanket with a complimentary color or pattern to the foot of the bed to add a new look. Or, fold the cover down halfway to expose a flattering blanket. If you choose to replace your comforter or duvet cover, go for a neutral color that will easily blend with your other colors. You can also use it again during your next bedroom makeover.

A headboard for your bed does not need to be expensive. In fact, with a little creativity, you can have a one of kind headboard with very little cost. A carved wood screen can be found at discount stores or resale shops. Remove the hinges and mount the screens above the bed with picture frame wire. Or, purchase six to nine picture frames with matting. Instead of using pictures, use your favorite wallpaper or wrapping paper to add an accent to the room.

Making your own canopy is another romantic-looking option. Install a curtain rod above the head of the bed. Add a lightweight fabric, such as tulle, in a soft color. For an even more sophisticated look, hang the rods above each end and sides of the bed for a canopy that completely surrounds your bed.

As a finishing touch in your bedroom, you can add a few accents. Lamps add a nice touch and do not need to pricey. Check out garage sales, flea markets, or thrift stores for unique lamps. Groups of candles and accent pillows offer a nice complimentary look, as well.

Making over your bedroom does not have to be expensive. You can quickly transform your slumber haven by making a few simple changes with color and texture that will make a big difference.

Put a touch of personality in your card the next time you need to send a greeting card by making it yourself. Handcrafting your own unique cards is easy and fun. The only limit is your imagination.

Before you make the card, think about who will be receiving it. Develop a theme. Do they like flowers? Or, are beaches more their taste? What is their favorite color? What is important to them? Are they sophisticated or more on the rugged side? Take the personality of the recipient into consideration when designing your card. This will give the card that personal touch that will make it a cherished keepsake.

Making your own card does not require a lot of expensive supplies. For a basic homemade card, all you need is paper, cutter, glue and some colored pencils. For more elaborate cards, you may want to buy more detailed materials. Scrapbooking supplies work great for greeting cards.

Once you have what you will need to make the card, the creativity begins. A simple picture drawn with colored pencils can add a personal touch. Or, for a more elaborate graphic, use a rubber stamp with an appropriate picture. Color the stamped picture in with metallic paint pencils. Other options are shapes cut out of paper or fabric. Add embellishments, such as stickers, buttons, sequins, ribbons, lace or other fun textures. This will give it that truly “one of a kind” look.”

Experiment with a few different styles and techniques to see what works best for you before investing too much money in more supplies. Find a friend who makes their own cards or scrapbooks and ask to borrow some of their supplies to try them out. This will give you a good idea of what you want to purchase in the future. A custom made stamp with the words “Made especially for you by…” will add your own unique branding the card.

Not only do you get joy out of making these unique cards, your recipients will love getting them, too. Knowing that someone took the time and effort to make them a card with their unique tastes in mid will be very special. Chances are a handmade card won’t go in the trash after a couple days. Instead, it may be put in a keepsake box to enjoy for years to come.

A few kinds of easy to make cards you might consider are:

Collage Card: These can be made with anything that is meaningful to the recipient, such as movie stubs, photos, or travel brochures.
Vintage Photo Card: Print a favorite picture in black and white. Add a caption or small embellishment for a classic-looking card
Window Card: Make a two layered card and cut a shape out of the top layer. Add a photo, embellishment or text greeting to the bottom layer for a personal touch.

Don’t wait for a special occasion to send these distinctive cards. Surprise someone you care about by sending them a card “Just Because.”

So, the next time you are faced with sending a greeting card to someone, stop yourself before you head to the nearest store. Instead, make the card yourself. Create a card that is as unique as the recipient. And when they ask you, “Did you make this yourself?” You can smile with pride and “Yes, I did!”
