Decorating for the Artistic Soul

Archive for April 2009

Area rugs are most often made out of silk and wool, cotton, jute or bamboo.  I am ignoring the synthetics, since they are not friendly to the environment. So what kind should you choose for your home?

Silk and wool rugs (the Persians and Oriental carpets)while made all over the world, most often come from Persia, India, Iran, China and Turkey. They can me handmade, hand-knotted, hand-tufted, hand-hooked, flat-woven, or Aubusson.

They don’t belong in areas where there is a lot of traffic, since they are costly, need to be dry-cleaned, and stain easily.  You can, however, spot clean them for small stains. They are best used under a glass table, in a conversation grouping, or in a bedroom.

Chenille rugs are usually made from cotton.  In the 50s, chenille was very popular for bathroom rugs and for bedspreads, but is enjoying new popularity as clothing,  area rugs and throw rugs. You might find them  braided or thickly woven in bright stripes or cheerful florals.

Because they can be thrown in the washer, they can be used anywhere, including kitchens, bathrooms and children’s rooms. If the rug you buy has no non-skid backing, put some non-slip sheeting under your new purchase. They show dirt easily, though, so I wouldn’t use them as a runner in a hallway.

Bamboo area rugs and mats are sturdy, and can be used both indoors and out.  They are versatile and come both patterned and solid-colored.  They are not expensive, and can be rolled up and easily moved from one spot to another.

Because they are all natural, strong, and easily wiped off, they can be used in all the places cotton can, with the addition of hallway runners, entryways, and patios. Bamboo regenerates quickly in the wild, making it very environmentally friendly.

When you have a very small entryway that is dark and undramatic, don’t give up the idea of doing something special with it. Dare to give it a theme and make it the element of surprise in your home. While you are not wanting to shock your guests, a pleasant surprise will always make a good impression.

Handle the darkness problem first.  A chandelier with higher than usual wattage is important.  A satin finish paint, rather than matte, will add brightness.  Stay with a very light color. Mirrors are a must…they not only make the room appear larger, but also will reflect the light, intensifying it.

Now for a dramatic scene. To make your guests feel they have stepped into a courtyard garden, place a narrow wicker bench along the wall. A silk tree standing in the corner, and a library table along the other wall  can have potted silk plants. A bamboo or jute runner on the floor, and a couple of framed photos of nature on the wall and you have your indoor garden.

Is the entryway too narrow even for that?  No problem!  Keep the bench on one wall…seating is always a nice touch, but exchange the library table for a tiny three-legged corner table with one silk plant on it.  Behind the bench, paint, or paste a mural of a tree, perhaps one covered in cherry blossoms or magnolias,  up the wall and onto the ceiling. A small bird perched on your plant, and you have the same look!

It’s spring and you are looking forward to spending time at your summer cottage. Sprucing it up a bit, and making a few not too pricey changes, will make it feel like new again. It will take a bit of time and creativity, but not a lot of money.

If your old, shabby chic furniture is looking more shabby and less chic, make some simple slipcovers out of canvas. It is a strong fabric, and easy to wash. To dress it up a bit, recover a few pillows and toss them on the furniture. You can use fabric remnants, or make it super classy by buying a used pair of vintage curtains (they can be stained or torn a bit) and using that fabric to make your pillows. You can get three 20” square pillows from one panel!

Whether your cottage has hardwood floors or linoleum, you can brighten them up with large area rugs. They can be pricey, but how about buying a few small ones and simply stitching them together? Lay out the design before you start.

Dress-up the bedroom by taking a set of sheets and pillowcases and adding an eyelet border to the top sheet and pillowcases…should take less than half an hour for the whole job!

Take that worn looking basket and spray paint it a light green. When it is dry, rub it with some steel wool to make it look antique. It can be a centerpiece on your table (filled with fresh fruit), hold magazines in your living room, towels in the bathroom, or rock and shell collections anywhere!
