Decorating for the Artistic Soul

Archive for June 2010

I have created this article to show everyone how glad I am with my July 4th decorations I have ordered from an online party store. Not only do they have the greatest looking July 4th decorations around they are very inexpensive as well.

A 4th of July party is generally fun and enjoyable for all ages. I have learned over the years that the more patriotic decorations you have the more uplifted and enthused your friends will be. Having the best decorations for that once-a-year affair is a MUST and surely worth it! My suggestion is to estimate your budget and write down a few things that come to mind you know you want to have at your bash. This will help save you several hours and money when finding out your decorations.

Here may be just a few ideas to guide you get started with your July 4th decorations….

* Red balloons
* Welcome banners
* American waving flags
* Tableware
* Party favors
* Photo props
* Stars and Firework Glitter
* Patriotic streamers and pictures

The point is to be innovative! Think about what your visitors will expect and meet their needs. If your on a budget then consider how you can get the greatest bang for your buck. Most decorations that hang down from something like streamers or posters are more than likely to fill a room but are relatively cheap. Watch out not to over do it! Sometimes, I go to themed parties where the designer took it overboard and everything just ran together. Make sure you keep things simple but fun at the same time.

Its also a intelligent idea to buy all of your things from one store. Often times if you mix and match products the colors do not match exactly which becomes noticeable to your visitors. Picking decorations from the same manufacturer or brand generally will solve this issue. Shopping online is great. I know the prices are terrific and your guests will be talking about your party for days.

I wish you the best with your 4th of July preparing. Remember to be safe and have fun!

Nothing says Independence Day quite like a colorful and thundering fireworks display, and if you’re lucky enough to be in any of the major destinations noted below this 4th of July, you’ll have a front row seat to some of the nation’s most dazzling pyrotechnic spectacles. Whether you plan on spending the holiday in the nation’s capital, the Big Apple, or even sunny Orlando, you can soak up patriotic spirit while marveling at colorful explosions that light up the night sky. To boot, parades, historic tours, concerts and other extras ensure there’s plenty to do for people of all ages. Travelers still have time to lock in low rates on airfare and score great July 4th hotel deals. Read on for a sampling of July 4th events you don’t want to miss.

1. Washington D.C.: Washington D.C. is unquestionably the most fitting place to soak up a fun-filled day of 4th of July festivities. The National Mall, with the U. S. Capitol and Washington Monument in the background, creates a stunning backdrop to the country’s 4th of July celebrations. This all-day event in the nation’s capital kicks off with a parade along Constitution Avenue from NW 7th to 17th Streets. During the day, you can enjoy readings of the Declaration of Independence at the National Archives, dance performances and cooking demonstrations at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, and an evening concert by the National Symphony Orchestra on the West Lawn. Immediately following the concert, a spectacular display of fireworks over the Capitol Building and Washington Monument caps off an unforgettable day in history-rich D.C.

2. Boston: Another of the nation’s premier destinations for history buffs, Boston was the site of major events in American History, from the Boston Massacre to the Boston Tea Party. The 29th annual Boston Harborfest is a multi-day Fourth of July celebration featuring hundreds of events throughout the historic city, many being free of charge. Boston Harborfest draws more than 2.5 million visitors to Boston each July, thus making it one of the nation’s largest patriotic celebrations. This year, Boston Harborfest runs June 30 through July 5. Featuring a variety of children’s activities, historic tours, concerts and Revolutionary era reenactments, it’s no wonder the American Bus Association has named Boston Harborfest one of North America’s Top 100 Events for 2010. The Fourth of July Pops Concert at the Esplanade precedes an impressive showcase of fireworks over the Charles River. Don’t miss Chowderfest on Monday, July 5, which affords visitors a unique opportunity to savor Boston’s most popular chowder concoctions.

3.New York City: Everyone knows it is home to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and widely-watched New Year’s Eve Ball Drop in Times Square. But New York City also delivers one of the biggest Fourth of July firework displays in the nation. The Macy’s July 4th fireworks display originally made its debut on the Hudson River in 1958. This year, the Macy’s fireworks show will feature more than 40,000 shells exploding at a whopping rate of more than 1,500 per minute and fireworks soaring up to 1,000 feet in the air. At approximately 9:20 pm on July 4th, the 26-minute display will be set off from six barges set between 24th and 50th Streets on the Hudson River. The fireworks will mark not only America’s birthday, but also the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson’s exploration of his namesake river. American Harmony is the theme of this year’s fireworks spectacular. Alternatively, join Big Onion Walking Tours at 1 p.m. for a walking tour of sites related to the Revolutionary War in Lower Manhattan, including Federal Hall.

4. Orlando: Orlando’s thrilling, world-famous theme parks – from Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando Resort to SeaWorld Orlando – each offer a bevy of fireworks celebrations you’ll definitely want to check out. Among them is Universal 360 – A Cinesphere Spectacular, which will start on July 4 and run most nights through August 8 at Universal Orlando Resort. The show employs four-story-tall, 360-degree projection “cinespheres,” outdoor speakers, music, lasers and pyrotechnic effects to position guests in the very center of their favorite films. The Fourth of July Cinesphere show will also include a thrilling finale complete with an eye-catching fireworks display. Otherwise, you can make plans to celebrate the Fourth of July with friends and family at the 2010 City of Kissimmee July 4th Celebration, which offers live entertainment, arts and crafts, a food festival, water-ski show, and – you guessed it – a brilliant fireworks display for free.

5. Los Angeles: If you’re spending the 4th of July on the west coast, consider taking an excursion to Los Angeles to take part in Southern California’s popular fireworks events. Among them is the 4th of July AmericaFest at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, which combines great music, excellent food, and fireworks galore. On July 4, tens of thousands will also descend on the community of Pacific Palisades for the Americanism Parade on Sunset Boulevard before lapping up family-friendly entertainment, patriotic songs and breathtaking fireworks at the second annual Palisades Rocks the Fourth concert at Palisades Charter High School.

As you can see, there are plenty of things to do in celebration of our nation’s 234th birthday. Whether your idea of a memorable 4th of July involves marching along Constitution Avenue, admiring a beautiful fireworks display over the Capitol Building, braving a daring roller coaster at a Walt Disney World theme park, or touring Boston’s historic neighborhoods, Independence Day 2010 promises to offer something for everyone.

  7. Start getting everything ready the day before the party. This includes manicuring your lawn and decorating your home. Go over your party list one more time to make sure everything is in order.
  8. Go over your menu for the party to ensure you have enough food for everyone and that you’re serving a good variety so there will be something for even the picky eaters.

  10. Get up early and take care of any last minute details so you’ll have plenty of time to get yourself ready before your guest begins to arrive.

Using these tips will help you plan out your party so everything will go smoothly. You’ll be able to enjoy the party more because you won’t be stressed out trying to take care of everything last minute. Planning ahead simply makes things easier and it helps to ensure your 4th of July party is one that everyone will have fond memories of for a long time.

Almost every homeowner will have some experience with interior decorating to some degree. The amount of interior decorating you do will depend on whether you rent, own your home or if you have the unique experience of building your home yourself. Normally, your options will be limited when you rent because owners don’t want their tenants making major changes. However, if you own your home or have it built yourself, you can be as creative and decorate anyway you want too.

Regardless of how much decorating you’re allowed to do everyone should know the basics of interior decorating. This will help you get the most out of the space and options you have no matter how limited you are.

When decorating your home, consider the following carefully:

  • Scale and proportion is vital if you want your décor to look professional. Scale is the size of the décor in comparisons with everything else in the room. Proportion is simply having everything in the room matching as far as size goes. For example, having a small framed picture on a large wall without anything else or placing a king size bed in a small bedroom would be out of proportion.
  • Balance is achieved by arranging the objects in the room in a way where they appear equal. Items can be balanced in two ways, either symmetrical or asymmetrical.
  • Contrast gives the room interest by adding color and patterns to the décor.
  • Rhythm is created by repeating color and patterns throughout the room.

When you apply the basic rules of interior decorating listed above you’ll create harmony within your home.

Knowing the basics of interior decorating will help you take the things you like and display them in a way that looks put together, warm and inviting. Understanding the basics of interior decorating and using them in your décor will make it possible for you to achieve the look you want. Above all else, decorate with items that you like personally and have fun.

Decorating the home is fun and exciting. It gives home owners a chance to create any type of atmosphere they want while adding their own unique style to their home. There are many decorating styles to choose from so there should be something to suit anyone’s taste.

The 6 most common decorating styles are listed below along with a brief description of each:

  1. Traditional– This style of decorating creates a calm orderly atmosphere that is always predictable. Nothing chaotic or wild will be found in this décor. The furnishings will all match and will have a classic feel to it.
  2. Contemporary– When decorating with the contemporary style you’ll use modern décor with clean rounded lines and create a casual atmosphere. This décor uses neutral elements, bold colors and open spaces. Contemporary décor is welcoming and comfortable.
  3. Country– Country style décor creates a warm, cozy atmosphere. It’s a way to bring a bit of the past to the present. There are no specific rules that apply to color when decorating country style but you can normally find lots of red, blue and white colors. Earth tones go well with this style and many homes use quilting racks, butter churns, wood stoves and spinning wheels as furnishings.
  4. Cottage– This style creates a homey feeling that is cozy and comfortable. It gives the decorator a chance to show off their personal taste and be creative. There’s nothing formal about this style.
  5. Country French– This is a style that is romantic and dramatic. Every color from the spectrum wheel can be used from bright yellow to burnt rust. The more color the better. It’s important to use natural materials for this decorating style. Stone floors, wool and cotton rugs and a stone fireplace will complete the look.
  6. Feng Shui– This style of decorating creates balance in the home and uses placement, color and shapes to promote wealth, love, happiness, success and peace. Feng Shui creates positive energy and harmony within the home.

Before you begin decorating your home take some time to go over the different decorating styles until you find the one that suits you the best. You can even use a combination of styles to create a different atmosphere in each room of your home.

Painting is an excellent hobby that can be enjoyed by both the young and old. It’s a fun and wonderful way to be creative because there are no restrictions. You can paint anything your heart desires from beautiful scenery to the abstract that leaves everything to the viewers imagination. Do you want to start painting but keep putting it off because you just don’t know how to get started? The following tips can help.

How to start hobby painting today:

  • Learn the basics concerning painting such as the different types of paint, how they’re used and how to blend colors.
  • Decide which type of paint you want to use. Your three choices are watercolor, oil and acrylic. Watercolor uses thin water based paint that dries quickly but they’re hard to blend. Oil paint uses pigments held together with an oil medium. They blend well but take a long time to dry. The end results are usually very dynamic and it’s a popular choice. Acrylic paint falls somewhere between the other two depending on how it’s mixed with a medium and it can create a unique look.
  • Determine how much of your budget you plan to put into your hobby. The supplies come in a wide price range from economical to very experience.
  • Based on the type of painting you decide to do and your budget, the next step will be to pick up your supplies. You’ll need paint, brushes, paper or canvas and an easel would be very helpful.
  • Set aside a time just for painting. Most people are so busy that if you don’t set aside a special time just for your hobby, you may find it difficult finding time to enjoy the things you love to do.
  • Give yourself time to learn how to paint. If you’re like most people, you’re not going to paint the perfect picture the very first time you try. It takes practice and experimenting but eventually, you’ll get the hang of it.

Painting is a great hobby that’s fun and rewarding. Your paintings can be framed and used to decorate your home or given to friends and family as gifts. Who knows, eventually you may even want to sell your paintings to earn a little extra income.

Decorating a kid’s room is much like any other room with a few extra rules. One of the first things that you have to do is take into consideration how old the child is. This is important because safety is going to be your number one concern.

If you have a smaller child you need to make sure you don’t place anything in the room they can get hurt on. This is the one room in the house where they will be spending time alone. It needs to be a safe place where they can play and feel comfortable and where you don’t have to worry.

Once the important issue of safety has been addressed then you can move on to the basic decorating rules that will help you accomplish your goal and have a room both of you will be happy with.

Tips for decorating a kid’s room:

  • Consider proportion when choosing the furniture for your kid’s room. Don’t try to put furniture too large or too much of it into a small room. This will make it too crowded and uncomfortable.
  • If your kids are school age they should have a desk and chair in their room that is suited for their size so they can do their school work comfortably. Having a foot stool in the closet so they can put up and get down their own clothing is also a great idea.
  • When choosing the color for your kid’s room, look for colors that inspire creativity and a relaxing atmosphere. Don’t be afraid to use different colors throughout the room when possible. For example, use calm relaxing colors around their bed and stimulating colors around the desk and work area. You can also use a variety of colors in the bedding and curtains to create a desirable atmosphere.
  • Consider functionality when choosing the furnishing in your kid’s room. Whenever you can, choose furniture that can grow with your child. This will serve multiple purposes and save you money in the long run. The furnishings should be suited for your child’s personality and be comfortable for entertaining friends and playing as well as doing their homework and sleeping.
  • When choosing fabrics and furnishings consider the amount of maintenance that will be needed to keep these items clean. For example, you don’t want to buy a dry clean only bedspread for your kid’s bed. Go for something that can be thrown in the washer instead.
  • When decorating a kid’s room you have to consider storage. If you don’t have an easy way for your child to store his or her toys, you can bet they will be scattered all about the room for the majority of the time.

Decorating a kids room can be fun and exciting but don’t get too carried away and forget to keep their needs and styles in mind. Allow them to make some decision so they will be happy with the end results.
