It seems like everyone has spent time and money decorating their home only to discover that they were still not completely happy with the end results. The problem is that you can’t quite put your finger on what’s wrong. You know something is missing or out of place but you are not sure what. Does this sound familiar? It happens to almost everyone especially if you are new to decorating.
The problem is that usually you have made one of the very common decorating mistakes that almost everyone makes at some point. There are several of these that occur on a regular basis but here we will cover the top 5 decorating mistakes made that leaves your home lacking that special touch.
1. Poor Lighting – One of the most common mistakes made is poor lighting. If the lighting is bad it can actually change the appearance of the room and you will not get the full effect of all your hard work. Adding lamps is a great way to brighten up any room and of course, make sure you let the sun shine in.
2. Not Being Original – You have most likely heard that you need to decorate a room so that everything matches. Well, matching is good but you don’t want to go overboard. If everything you have in one room has the exact same pattern, then it can become very boring and may even look messy. Therefore, the secret is to coordinate and pick out colors that blend in together but that does not look exactly alike.
3. Not Buying Quality – Make sure that you buy quality products. Many people tend to think that the amount of items they have in a room is very important. It is for this reason that they tend to buy more items of less quality, which is the opposite of what they should be doing. Too many accessories in a room will make it look crowded and unorganized. Instead, concern yourself with purchasing a few items that are of high quality. If you like, you can always add to your collection over a period of time if you want more. Remember, your goal is to accessorize with a few great pieces that you really love.
4. Poor Furniture Placement – Where you place your furniture is very important. Moving your furniture to different places creates a new effect and can make a room look smaller or larger depending on where it is placed. Experiment a little to see what will give you the best results.
5. Trying to Hurry and Finish – The biggest mistake that most people make is getting in a hurry. Designing a home takes time to research your options and to discover what will look the best in certain types of environments. Therefore, be prepared to take your time and look for items that suit your personal style and if you don’t find exactly what you want the first time you go out shopping, wait until a later time and try again.
Decorating your home can be fun and exciting and best of all, when you are finished you get to enjoy the end results for a long time to come. Get the best results for all your hard work by not making these top 5 decorating mistakes.
